A24’s Backrooms Sets Film History after a $100m box office debut.
If you’ve been anywhere on the internet or in a theater over the past month, it’s been impossible to avoid 20-year-old Kane Parsons’ hit box-office and film debut, “Backrooms”.
With young directors in their 20’s being nothing short of the topic of choice for headlines in recent film industry newsletters, it begs the question of companies and empires of the films we watch today: “What happens when we trust young directors and screenwriters?” In recent events, Curry Barker, a 26-year-old director of the recent frightening and record-breaking film, ''OBSESSION”, with an astounding cast of Hollywood newcomers and soon-to-be, if not already established stars after the films success, with a majority of them being in their 20’s, and the film being made in a month has set the bar for young creatives looking for success in the industry yet being doubtful of their age, defying those standards entirely.
Kane has also made film history, being the youngest director to break such a record for a horror film’s debut, along with being only 20 years old releasing an A24 film.
The film follows the main character, Clark. An owner of a furniture store with a struggling relationship, mental health issues, and a mysterious door appearing in his “No Credit, No Problem” adorned furniture store.
The film gradually leads into unknownism, unfamiliarity, and characteristics of horror that will have your mind racing for the next few days, as a majority of A24 films do. It’s definitely worth a screening for those interested in horror, independent creators, filmmakers, and everyone in between.
